The primary purpose of a name and a nickname is the same. We call or recognize people by their names. Well apparently, no one knows who invented the idea of using nicknames, but its history dates back to the 13th century. Hey, what's your nickname, by the way? Who gave it to you? We are sure someone in your family might have given that to you. Most of us get our monikers from our parents, family or friends. When it comes to celebrities, they either give themselves cool nicknames or receive them from the media or their fans. As you may know already, many Hollywood stars don't prefer using their real names. Check the cool nicknames of 12 celebrities and find out how they got them! 

1.Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen's nickname is "The Boss", and he actually deserves to be called so. People has been calling him "The Boss" since the beginning of his career. A few years ago, the Oscar-winning musician explained the meaning behind his nickname to VH1. He said, "It started with people who worked for me. It was not meant like 'the boss with a capital B,' it was more like 'the boss where's my dough this week?'" He laughed. "It was sort of like that and it was sort of out of a friendly, I guess it was from the band, it was just a term among friends. It's funny because I never really liked it. I still, I never really liked it."

2.Eminem

Eminem might be his stage name, but his birth name is getting more attention these days. Since hitting the music scene, he's been known as Eminem, but with the release of his latest album, the rapper has been called Marshall Mathers much more as of late. His original nickname 'Slim Shady' has not been used since he released his first album, but it's definitely better than being called a piece of candy.

3.Armando Cristian - Pitbull

"Pitbull" is a weird nickname. We got used to hearing it, but we would understand how uncanny the name sounds only if we had met a guy named "Pitbull" before. Rapper Pitbull's original name is Armando Christian. The Cuban rapper chose his nickname because he wanted a new moniker that signifies a strong force. While talking about his nickname, Pitbull said, "They [Pitbull dogs] bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they're outlawed in Dade County. They are basically everything that I am. It's been a constant fight."  He also has a lesser-known nickname, "Mr. International". 

4.Britney Spears - Brit

The $185 Million net worth singer Britney Spears was named the 'Princess of Pop' before she hit the age of 25. As her career progressed, her fans began calling her 'Queen B.' She is one of the few people in the world to be called a princess and a queen. The songstress has also been called 'Brit' and 'Brit Brit' by those closest to her. On top of those nicknames, Britney is also referred to as Pinkey.

5.Snooki - Nicole P.

For years anyone who watched the Jersey Shore, referred to the short girl with the hair bump as Snooki. It got to a point where no one knew what her real name was, or even cared for that matter. These days, The Bisexual Snooki prefers to be called her birth name, which is Nicole Polizzi.

6.Rihanna - Ri

Rihanna has one of those unique names that you don't hear every day. But even with a one-of-a-kind name, the singer still has numerous nicknames. On occasion, her friends, fans and the media will refer to her as 'RiRi,' which is shortened version of her first name. This nickname is also spelled 'RihRih.' Rihanna has also been called, 'Ri,' 'Caribbean Queen,' and 'The Barbados Babe.'

7.Lady Gaga - Mother Monster

The $275 Million net worth singer Lady Gaga has a legion of fans that refer to her as 'Mother Monster.' Her army of fans, who call themselves 'Monsters' also tend to refer to the singer as GaGa on occasion. Of course Lady Gaga is a stage name, but even the singer's family doesn't call her by her birth name. Gaga is called 'Sucra' by her grandma; 'Loopy' by her grandfather and she was known as 'Germ' in high school.

8.Madonna - Madge

Madonna will always be known as "The Material Girl." The eccentric emcee has accumulated several nicknames throughout her career. Her second famous nickname is "Madge." The media, in particular, prefers calling her Madge. Her friends call her "M" and she named herself "Esther," which is a Kabbalah name she picked up. Madonna is also known as Nonnie, Maddy, and Mo. Her honorific nickname is "Queen of Pop." One in Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are likely to replace Madonna to become the new queen of pop, but we don't think that will be an easy task to accomplish.

9.Christina Aguilera - Xtina

Christina Aguilera has been in the music business for quite a while. Aside from being called a Diva and a Bitch by the media, Aguilera is widely known as Xtina. Her nickname is just a shortened version of her first name. The songstress who charges a hefty appearance fees is also known as: Chrissy, Baby Jane and Candy.

10.Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt

For some inane reason, fans love to merge the names of celebrity couples together, and Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are no different. Known as 'Brangelina' collectively, the couple has one of the most popular celebrity nicknames. Though the pair isn't married, they have been joined at the hip for several years now. Their nickname has become so popular, that even the media refers to them as one single entity.

11.Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson had many nicknames. Of all his nicknames, MJ was famous. Many of his fans including the media refer to Michael Jackson as MJ. He also had an honorific nickname, which we believe is one of the most famous honorific nicknames in the entertainment industry, "The King of Pop." Michael Jackson was also known as The Gloved One, Jacko, Smelly, Applehead, and Mike. His critics, however, gave him a rather awkward and insulting nickname, "Wacko Jacko." Many tabloids and magazines used the "Wacko Jacko" nickname to refer to the best-selling music artist, at a time when he was in the news for wrong reasons.  

12.Sean Combs

Sean Combs has more nicknames than any human should be allowed to have. His mother nicknamed him 'Puffy' when he was a child because he would huff and puff when he got mad. As he got older, Combs began changing his name. He did it so often that people don't even know what to call him these days. He currently goes by: Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy, Sean Combs and Puffy.
